Debate Highlights: Biden Struggles Against Trump on Economy

During the recent presidential debate, President Joe Biden struggled to demonstrate his readiness for a second term, faltering against former President Donald Trump. The debate was controlled and policy-focused, contrasting the 2020 debates’ outbursts and testy exchanges.

Biden’s performance raised concerns about his age and mental acuity, with his hoarse voice, halting responses, and confusion over key data points. Even his prepared closing remarks were marred by stumbles and incoherence. In contrast, Trump appeared confident and robust. Biden’s allies attributed his performance to a cold, attempting to downplay its impact.

Trump maintained a mostly calm demeanor, avoiding the outbursts that previously hurt him and refraining from giving Democrats ammunition to label him as extreme. Although he still used his characteristic exaggerations and superlatives, his behavior was notably restrained compared to past debates.

Biden defended his economic record, highlighting efforts to help Black families with unemployment, housing discrimination, and student loans. However, he acknowledged ongoing inflation issues, which polls indicate are driving Black voters toward Trump—a critical demographic for Biden’s 2020 victory.

The candidates blamed each other for potential economic hardships if elected. Trump claimed Biden would raise taxes on families, while Biden warned that Trump’s tariff plans would increase costs for households. Biden has pledged not to raise taxes on those earning less than $400,000, while Trump proposes a 10% tariff on all goods, potentially costing households $1,700 annually according to the Peterson Institute for International Economics.

On abortion, Trump presented a moderate stance, taking credit for overturning Roe v. Wade but stating he would not ban the abortion drug mifepristone and supported exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. He accused Democrats of supporting late-term abortions and infanticide, which Biden firmly denied, stating, “We are not for late-term abortion period. Period. Period.”

The debate also saw Trump accuse China of exacerbating the US opioid crisis and bringing the country closer to a global conflict. He warned that China would dominate the US if current policies continued. Following the debate, the dollar inched higher in Asian trading as markets assessed Trump as having the upper hand.
